One of my hobby back when I was in a 3rd grade was collecting cute letter set. Theres a lot of cute motiff such as flowers, animals, cartoon character, and hearts. If my parents take me to a book store, I would go to the stationery section to admire those letter set. Usually my mother would nag when I ask her to buy me a new letter set because she thinks I already had too many and I never use them.

And then I had an idea to use my letter set to send my cousin, Nena, a letter. Nena is my cousin that I’m really close to because we had the same age. We actually live in the same city and go to the same elementary school. The content of our letter is so funny now that i read them again. It always started with, “Hello! How are you? I’m doing fine here.” While we met almost everyday.

Nena then started to collect letter set too but she have a different taste when it comes to it. She likes bold colors such as red hot, electric blue, bright yellow and black. While that time my taste is more to soft colors. Our hobby just stands to the 5th grade because that time we were in the same class so the letter topic kind of limited when we had the same friends.

Now, Nena grow up to be an edgy style woman like her letter set colors and work in the cool advertising world. Both of us didn’t send each other emails like we used to but I’ll never forget the feeling while waiting the bold colored envelope with my name on it from Nena arrived. This “Envelope” collection is inspired by my memories with Nena.

Isi surat kami lucu sekali bila aku baca lagi. Pasti dimulai dengan, “Halo! Bagaimana kabarmu? Aku disini baik-baik saja.”  Padahal kami bertemu hampir setiap hari di sekolah.

Nena jadi ikutan mengkoleksi kertas surat sepertiku tapi seleranya berbeda denganku.

Being in Italy, I can’t help admiring one of the country’s best traits: young Italian guys. I got to admit there are a lot of handsome men there. My friend Zara who lived in Milan once said, “Even Italian frogs look handsome”. Italian guys are stylish. A lot of the using designers outfit, sometimes head to toe. Maybe their underwear too, hehe. The bags that they wear are also stylish. I even re-sketch 2 bags that I saw on guys there and name it “Skiro” and “Tsavo”.

And then there is Sebastian. Remember the guy who’s looking at me while taking picture’s in piazza Venezia? Well, apparently we met again. I was drinking cappuccino in an outdoor table of a cozy little café, watching people pass me by, feeling happy after finishing the “Nava” bag sketch. He suddenly stands in front of my table and take my picture without asking me. I thought it was rude. He disturbed my moment! I was going to protest but then he seat on my table like he knows me or something and call the waiter to order. I said to him, “Erase my picture. I don’t like strangers taking a picture of me like that and there are other unoccupied tables here!” I was hoping he understand English or we might have a big scene. Thankfully he did understand. He just casually reply, ‘Why? Are you waiting for someone else? Your lover, maybe? And as the picture… I can’t do anything about it. It is done and this is not a digital camera where you can erase a picture so easily.”

Despite of that rocky start, we then can make friends. Sebastian actually lived in New York and currently visiting for his cousin’s wedding. That explains his excellent english. The blonde girl I saw on Piazza Venezia was the girl his cousin’s married to. That explains why he is so friendly to her. He offers me to be my guide in Rome for 3 days before I went to Paris. We travel through Rome with his father old motorcycle and it was amazing.

Sebastian is very handsome with his tan skin, thick curling dark hair, thick eyebrow too, tall body build, and also very Italian. He sometimes holds my hand, compliment me, hold me, and kiss my cheek when we meet and departed but still very polite because he respect that I am a nice eastern girl. I can’t help to fall for him in those 3 days. Sadly, he didn’t show up at Trevi fountain in the afternoon before I leaved as promised. I waited for an hour but eventually I got to go catch my night train to Paris. I don’t know what happen that day, I lost his name card. It must have been slipped somewhere. I just hope nothing serious keep him to see me that day. I must admit he still haunts my thoughts sometimes. Then I got a Facebook message by the end of last year. The message was:”finally found you on facebook”. The sender: Sebastian.

Pesan itu berisi:”finally found you on facebook”. Pengirim pesan: Sebastian.

This is a story of how I got my inspiration for “Romansa”

I was reorganizing my room a few moths ago and then I found a photo album about a journey that I took way back when I was fresh out of college. The photo album brings up a lot of memories. It was a journey to Europe and I remember having a lot of memorable moment there. But one thing for sure from that journey, of all the cities I’ve been to, Rome has captured my heart the most. The city awakes a lot of my senses. I found love in Rome and it’s not just for the city.

I was just finished my last academic responsibility at college that time. All I have to do was waiting for the graduation 2 months ahead. My parents already promise to finance this trip as a graduation gift from a year ago. It became my motivation to finish my thesis early. I have a best friend called Eleni who lived in Rome. She’s an Italian and she used to live in my neighborhood when her father was assigned to work in Indonesia. We were close back then, and still keep in touch until now. Now, she’s playing the violin for Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma. Isn’t she’s great? Her violin lessons have paid her well. She was so excited when I told her about the trip and insist me to stay in her place for as long as I pleased.

Rome was the 1st city I visit on my trip. I stayed there for more than a week. Eleni was so busy preparing for the orchestra’s next performance so she can’t accompany me as much as she liked to. But that’s ok with me. It’s actually feels like an adventure when I explored the city all by myself. Rome is such an amazing city. When I got there in the afternoon, I almost cried because of the beauty of the buildings there. I can’t believe the city is right in front of my eyes. I keep shaking Eleni’s arms to show how excited I am.

I went to Colosseum, of course. The scale of that place is amazing. The thought that this civilization could build such a vast space that has now inspired our arenas. The Colosseum can hold 50,000 people. It is somewhat difficult to picture what the place once looked like with all of the marble finishes on most of it and all the seats. It must have been great. If only I could do some time traveling to see what it looks like in its golden era.

I visited the ruins of the Roman city of Foro Romano that was buried and then excavated around the 1900’s. There are housing neighborhoods, forums, temples, monuments, pillars, little pieces of marble and buildings lying everywhere and yes, I touched a piece! It is like touching a piece of the past. It has old streets and buildings, monuments then underneath the city as old as 2800 years. You can feel the history here, and yet there is a modern city next to it all.

Piazza Venezia is very beautiful. It is not a very old building in Rome standard, but I can see it was build to match the greatness of the Romans era. The pillars of stones and the statues were so grand. It was located at the centre of Rome and a lot of people meeting there. I imagine it as a romantic place to wait for a date. There’s gorgeous Italian guy stands not far from me. He keeps looking at me while I’m taking pictures, making me blush. But then a blonde girl comes up and hugs him. Ups, false alarm.

There are a lot of other amazing places I have visited in Rome but if I write it down here, it would be a 12 chapter book and it wouldn’t be about the inspiration for “Romansa”. The three places that I mention to you in this post are what inspire “Romansa” for me. I pour down the shapes, the colors, and the feelings I get from these threes places to the “Romansa” bags. The sophistication of the Roman’s past and how it influences my design. I just hope you can feel that too.

To be continued…

Piazza Venezia sangat indah.

The story of “Cappuccino”

Hello!

It’s me, Taqilla.

Taqilla’s brand has been around for 2 years now and has gained some loyal friends who made it possible for Taqilla to be around this long. As a special treat, I want to share some stories with you about “behind the scene” of how I got my design inspiration. Almost all of my designs are inspired from the events of my life. It can come from a simplest thing of every day’s life to the events that change my life. But let’s start from something simple like how I got the inspiration of the “Cappuccino” bags.

I hope you enjoy the stories as I do writing it. Come again and get the updates.

.

Halo!

Aku harap kamu menikmati cerita-ceritaku seperti aku menikmati menuliskannya.

.

Behind the design of “Cappuccino”

My ideal type of day always starts with a cup of coffee.

Particularly, cappuccino.

My day would not be perfect without it. Call me addicted but a doze of that mix of coffee and milk with a little bit of foam can soothe me and makes me feel that everything is going to be alright. Well, maybe I exaggerated a little bit.  🙂

One day, I woke up in the morning and get ready for work as usual. But when I’m about to make a cup of cappuccino, it turns out my favorite instant cappuccino box is empty! I forgot to include it in my grocery shopping list yesterday. Mean while I have a morning meeting with a buyer at their office and I don’t have time to buy a cup of cappuccino. I might just have to survive the morning without it.

Fortunately, the meeting went well despite my concentration is a little bit distracted by the dancing cappuccinos in my head. I have to thanks Melissa, my officemate who came along in that meeting. She covers for me so I don’t look so clueless in front of the buyers. Yes, the buyers didn’t serve us coffee. They only serve us tea and I don’t want to look so demanding by asking coffee instead.

When the meeting is over, Melissa literally drags me to the nearest coffee shop. So there we are in a Coffee shop, Melissa cut my pleasure of ordering my cup of coffee by ordering it for me. I know she’s doing it just so she can get on my nerve. But it’s all forgotten when my cappuccino arrives. I smell the aroma and take a zip of my cappuccino. Suddenly the world is in Technicolor again. My mood is instantly better. I don’t even care if Melissa is making fun of my milk foam mustache.

As I steer my cappuccino, I suddenly have a vision of a bag. A brown leather bag with an accent of something that looks like milk foams. Maybe from something like wool fabric. I grab my pen and draw it on a piece of the coffee shop’s tissue right away so I wont forget. It becomes the 1st draft of my “cappuccino” theme.

Melissa then takes something out of her bag and said, “do you know what can make this cappuccinos tastes even better? Oreo biscuits!”

She offers me some of her Oreos and my day is getting better already.

.

Tapi semua terlupakan ketika cappuccino-ku datang. Aku menhirup aromanya dan menyeruputnya sedikit. Dunia pun serasa penuh warna kembali. Suasana hatiku langsung baik.
